The Story of Wedding Videography: Capturing Love Through the Ages

Weddings are one of the most significant events in a couple’s life, and capturing the memories of the day has always been important. Over the years, photography has been the primary medium for preserving the memories of weddings. However, in recent years, wedding videography has become increasingly popular. This article aims to tell the story of wedding videography and how it has evolved over the years.

What is wedding videography

First of all, what is wedding videography? Surely everyone knows it but few know what it really is.

Wedding videography is the art and process of capturing the precious moments of a wedding day on film or digital media. A wedding videographer uses specialized equipment and techniques to record the ceremony and reception, including the exchange of vows, the first dance, and speeches given by friends and family members.

The final product of wedding videography is a video that showcases the highlights of the wedding day, allowing the couple to relive those special moments for years to come. The video can be edited and customized to the couple’s preferences, including the choice of music and style of editing.

The importance of wedding videography cannot be overstated. While photographs capture individual moments frozen in time, a wedding video captures the full spectrum of emotions and actions that make a wedding day special. Watching the video can transport the couple back to that momentous day and help them relive the joy, love, and excitement that they felt.

The early days

Wedding videography began in the 1970s when video cameras became widely available. However, the equipment was bulky and expensive, and only a few professionals offered wedding videography services. The first wedding video was usually shot in the style of a home movie, with a single camera and no editing.

At the time, the main challenge was the limited recording time of video cameras. Videographers had to switch tapes frequently, making it challenging to capture every moment of the wedding day. Additionally, the quality of the video was not as good as it is today, with low resolution and poor color accuracy.

Despite these challenges, wedding videography was still a popular choice for couples who wanted to capture their special day on film. The videos were often sentimental, capturing the raw emotions of the day in a way that photography alone could not.

During the 1980s, video technology became more affordable and portable, and wedding videography began to gain popularity. Couples started to request more professional-style wedding videos, which included multi-camera setups, editing, and special effects. This allowed videographers to create more polished and sophisticated wedding videos that were closer in quality to movies than home movies.

Wedding videography also became more creative during the 1980s. Videographers experimented with different styles and techniques, such as slow motion, time-lapse, and animation, to create unique and memorable wedding videos.

Despite the advances in technology, wedding videography was still a niche industry in the 1980s, with only a small number of professionals offering wedding videography services. However, the industry was poised for explosive growth in the following decade, with the rise of digital video technology.

The 1990s: The rise of digital video

The 1990s saw the rise of digital video technology, which revolutionized wedding videography. Digital video cameras were smaller and lighter, making them more portable and easier to use. The introduction of non-linear editing software allowed videographers to edit footage on a computer, adding special effects and music to the videos.

The quality of the video also improved significantly in the 1990s, with higher resolution and better color accuracy. This allowed videographers to create more cinematic and professional-looking wedding videos. In addition, the cost of digital video equipment continued to decrease, making it more accessible to a wider range of videographers.

Wedding videography became more popular during the 1990s, with more couples requesting professional-style wedding videos. Videographers began to incorporate storytelling and narrative elements into their videos, creating a more emotional and engaging experience for the viewer. Wedding videos were no longer just a record of the day but also a work of art that captured the essence of the couple and their love story.

The rise of digital video technology also led to the development of new distribution channels for wedding videos. VHS tapes were still the primary medium for delivering wedding videos in the 1990s, but some videographers began to experiment with DVDs, which offered better video quality and more flexibility in terms of editing and distribution.

The 1990s were a decade of rapid growth and innovation in wedding videography, setting the stage for even more significant changes in the following decade.

The Present: The importance of wedding videography

Wedding videography has come a long way since its early days, and today it plays a critical role in documenting and preserving one of the most important days in a couple’s life. With the rise of social media and the internet, wedding videos have become more accessible and shareable than ever before, allowing couples to relive their special day and share it with friends and family around the world.

The quality of wedding videos has improved dramatically in recent years, with high-definition cameras and professional-grade editing software producing stunning cinematic masterpieces. Wedding videographers now offer a wide range of styles and formats, from traditional documentary-style videos to cinematic films that look like Hollywood productions.

In addition to the traditional wedding video, many videographers now offer “love story” or engagement videos, which tell the couple’s love story in a cinematic way, often incorporating interviews with the couple and their friends and family.

Wedding videography has also become more important as a marketing tool for wedding vendors. Couples often use wedding videos to select their vendors, such as photographers, florists, and DJs. Wedding vendors can showcase their work in a video format, allowing potential clients to get a better sense of their style and expertise.

Finally, wedding videography has become an essential part of the wedding planning process, with many couples prioritizing video over other wedding expenses. A wedding video is a tangible way to remember the day, capturing not just the sights and sounds but also the emotions and memories that make a wedding so special.

The Future: The evolution of wedding videography

The future of wedding videography is exciting, with new technologies and trends emerging that will continue to shape the industry. Here are some possible developments we can expect to see in the coming years:

  1. Virtual and augmented reality: With the rise of virtual and augmented reality, wedding videographers can create immersive experiences that transport the viewer to the wedding day. This technology will allow viewers to feel like they are actually there, experiencing the wedding from the perspective of the couple or a guest.

  2. Live streaming: Live streaming has become increasingly popular during the pandemic, allowing couples to share their wedding day with guests who are unable to attend in person. This trend is likely to continue, with more couples opting to live stream their weddings to a global audience.

  3. 360-degree video: 360-degree video is a technology that allows the viewer to look around the video in any direction, creating a more immersive experience. Wedding videographers can use 360-degree video to capture the entire wedding day, allowing viewers to see every detail and angle of the event.

  4. Drones: Drones have already revolutionized wedding videography, allowing videographers to capture stunning aerial shots of the wedding venue and surrounding landscape. As drone technology continues to advance, we can expect to see even more creative and innovative uses of this technology in wedding videography.

  5. Interactive videos: Interactive videos allow the viewer to interact with the content, making the video a more engaging and personalized experience. Wedding videographers can use interactive videos to create customized experiences for each viewer, allowing them to choose which parts of the wedding they want to see and how they want to experience the day.

  6. Artificial intelligence: Artificial intelligence is already being used in many industries, including wedding videography. AI can be used to automate certain aspects of video production, such as editing and color correction, freeing up videographers to focus on more creative aspects of the video.

Overall, the future of wedding videography looks bright, with new technologies and trends emerging that will continue to push the boundaries of what is possible. As wedding videographers continue to experiment with these new tools and techniques, we can expect to see even more innovative and exciting wedding videos in the years to come.

Ready to answer to all of your questions and needs

Sure! You can request the price quotation by calling me or filling out the form. If you prefer, you can also send an email to this address: info@thirtyfivestudios.com

Weddings and elopements are confirmed only by contract and first deposit. Usually couples book their event 6-9 months in advance: for this reason, please contact us in time so that we can check our availability immediately.

Generally work is divided into two types: weddings and elopements.

For the wedding what is delivered is:

  • Trailer 4K (from 2 to 4 minutes).
  • Film 4K (from 10 to 15 minutes).
  • Extra videos 4K (these are video clips in addition containing full speeches, dances and other things).

For the elopement what is delivered is:

  • Instagram Reel (60 seconds).
  • Film 4K (from 5 to 7 minutes).

However, nothing prevents you from extending your requests when signing the contract. Request more information and take a look at our pricelist to find out about all the services we offer.

The payment is divided in three parts:

  • 40% to block the date with signing of the contract.
  • 40% the day of the event.
  • 20% after checking the videos.

As soon as we receive the last payment, you can download the videos from our personal Google Drive.

Generally, no more than 90 days, as written in the contract. However, by choosing “fast delivery” you can receive the finished work within 15 days.

The videos are delivered in digital format via our Google Drive. However, upon extra payment, you can request a usb pen box set on which you can keep a copy of the videos.

Weddings and elopements have always been made by me and my team of professional videographers. However, during our acquaintance you will know immediately if I will be free for your event or if my team will be present.

For years so far, we have chosen not to charge for the drone as for a service apart, so it is already included in our basic package and there is no increase in price. This instrument will be used at our discretion, where there is needed.

In some places drone use is unfortunately not permitted. In that case we will use 4K stock aerial footage of the location.

In a wedding we generally stay from 8 to 10 hours. For an elopement the service time ranges from 4 to 6 hours.

Obviously it is possible to create a tailor-made contract for you in order to cover the entire event (welcome dinner, night party, post and pre wedding experiences).

Yes, you can make some small changes to the video such as scene changes. It is not possible to change the music because the music is always chosen by the couple before starting the assembly phase.

We always give the couple the choice of two important things:
the music and the parts of the speeches.

The music can be chosen by the couple before or after the wedding day.

For the speeches, however, we send the couple all the videos of the speeches and the couple can tell us the most important minutes they want to have in the video.

In this way we try to create a product that is as close to what the couple would like to receive.

Obviously this is not a requirement. If the couple doesn’t want to do this, they can totally rely on our personal taste.
